Role of the Head of City Garage

Responsibilities of this positions include:
  • Analyze data and make recommendations regarding city fleet utilization levels and replacement schedules.
  • Assist department supervisors in determining the need for commercial rental of vehicles and equipment as opposed to purchasing additional vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist in developing and implementation of charge-back rates and a billing system for fleet maintenance services charged to city departments.
  • Assist superintendent in interviewing, hiring, and training employees, as well as planning, evaluating performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Coordinate with department supervisors and administration in developing policies and procedures governing the use of inspection of, and reporting of defects in vehicles and equipment to reduce improper use and/or neglect.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with departments which utilizes services at the City Garages.
  • Develop budget for the Fleet Maintenance Department.
  • Develop city fleet preventative maintenance policies and city standards for proper vehicle and equipment usage. Also assists in disciplinary policies for the abuse and neglect of vehicles and equipment.
  • Develop cost-effective fleet replacement schedules and makes recommendations regarding fleet replacement funding for city departments.
  • Provide guidelines for maintenance and repair of city-owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensure proper administration for repair and maintenance of city-owned vehicles and make decisions and recommendations on the daily administration of the City Garage, resolving issues regarding target and non-target costs.
  • Inspect fleet maintenance facilities and makes recommendations for improvements when necessary to ensure an operational and environmentally safe / OSHA compliant work area.
  • Instruct other department employees of proper care and use of city vehicles, and applicable safety precautions and procedures for vehicle maintenance.
  • Maintain and evaluates serviceability status of city vehicles, recommends necessary replacement to appropriate person or department, and assists with preparing specifications.
  • Maintain employee work records, recording hours, and work performed.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, parts, and tools; submits requisitions as needed.
  • Monitor customer feedback to the contractor supplying fleet maintenance services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Provide safety training for city department regarding the operation and maintenance of city fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Serve on 24-hour call for emergencies.
