Anderson WiFi FAQ

Welcome to the Anderson WiFi Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

Q1. What is AndersonWifi?

A1. AndersonWifi is a wireless or WiFi Internet signal that is transmitted in various locations around the city.  The service is a byproduct of a municipal communication system that was put in place for the utility’s Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) project.

Q2. Why are the hotspots located like they are?

A2. Several locations are specifically for the AMR project.  These hotspot might not seem to be in a good place but there’re needed there for AMR.  Other locations were chosen for Traffic Signal control, Police and Fire projects.  While other locations such as parks and areas where people gather were chosen to serve mobile users.  This service is also provided by the city for business travelers as a way to help them stay connected while on business in Anderson.

Q3. Can I get it at my home?

A3. AndersonWifi is not intended as a replacement for residential Internet services like Cable or DSL.  The cost to build that kind of network is cost prohibitive and would result in the service no longer being free.

Q4. Will there be more hotspots added?

A4. Yes, we are evaluating other municipal applications and if these projects require more units be deployed we will open them up as hotspot for the public.

Q5. Are there any restrictions on using the system?

A5. Yes.  Because the service is free there is limited funding for Internet bandwidth.  File sharing and video downloads can gobble up bandwidth making the service slow for other users.  If we see users abusing the bandwidth we will either limit their use or block them from the network.

Q6. Do you filter content?

A6. Yes we try to block pornographic sites but this can be difficult with so much content being added to the Internet daily.  We recommend parents monitor their children’s use and/or add software on the local computer that will aid in limiting undesirable sites.

Q7. How safe am I when I connect?

A7. Precaution should always be taken when connecting to the Internet.  We highly recommend users have Anti-Virus software along with Firewall or other intrusion prevention software loaded.
