Neighborhood Programs

Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP)

The goal is to stabilize neighborhoods by addressing abandoned and foreclosed property through acquisition, demolition, new construction and rehabilitation.

The city's communtiy development department received both Federal entitlement and State competitive "pots" of dollars for this program. The NSP Federal program is funded by the department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD). The competitive "pot" is funded by the State. The goals of both programs include:

Stimulating the local economic economy through construction job creation and creating safe, livable, and viable neighborhoods through the removal of blight, infilling with new affordable housing, and upgrading basic housing stock.

Weed & Seed

Weed and Seed is a community-based multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention and neighborhood restoration. The goals of Weed and Seed are to control violent crime, drug trafficking and drug-related crime in targeted high-crime neighborhoods and provide a safe environment free of crime and drug use for residents. The Weed and Seed strategy brings together federal, state, and local crime-fighting agencies, social service providers, representatives of the public and private sectors, prosecutors, business owners, and neighborhood residents under the shared goal of “weeding out” violent crime and gang activity while “seeding in” social services and economic revitalization. Weed and Seed began with three pilot sites in 1991 and has spread quickly to more than 300 high-crime neighborhoods across the nation. The Weed and Seed strategy is governed by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Capacity and Development.

Neighborhood Crime Watch

The Anderson Police Department, through its Neighborhood Crime Watch program, works to create a working relationship with the citizens which we serve at the neighborhood level. Officers host monthly meetings in various locations throughout the city. Such meetings provide an invaluable forum by which to accomplish the following:
  • accurately assessing the quality of life within a neighborhood
  • tracking and reducing the crime rate within a neighborhood
  • creating an open dialogue and sharing of ideas between cops and citizens
  • providing a forum by which to educate and train citizens on how to help police reduce and prevent crime in their neighborhood, thereby protecting themselves and their property
If you would like to inquire about a Neighborhood Crime Watch program in your area, please call 648-6709.
