Historic Anderson
The Anderson Historical and Cultural Preservation Commission was established in the early 1980s to preserve, promote, and develop the historical and cultural resources of Anderson. In order to help maintain and preserve historic features in the districts, the Commission reviews all exterior modifications made to structures and sites in the districts. Historic guidelines were created in 1995 to help protect and maintain our precious resources.
The districts include a variety of parks, homes, apartment buildings and some commercial establishments. There are about 300 structures in each of the residential districts and approximately 60 in the Downtown district.
Anderson has three historic districts:
- Downtown Anderson District
- West Eighth Street Historic District, and
- West Central Historic District
Anderson also has eight (8) individual scattered historic sites:
- Anderson Fine Arts Center
- Saint Mary's Catholic Church
- The Gruenewald Home
- Byrum Hall at Anderson University
- Trinity Episcopal Church
- Fire Station #4
- Athletic Pool
- Rush Temporaries
If you wish to restore, rehabilitate or alter a historic structure, you must first submit an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Please visit Forms and Applications and scroll to the Municipal Development section to download the application.
