Local Disaster Preparedness
Recommendations for actions in case of terrorism Respirator Fact Sheet - What you should Know... The Anderson Emergency Management Agency is responsible for ensuring that the City is prepared to meet the challenges that are associated with community disasters.
“The calm before the storm” means that tornados can appear quickly
when skies appear clear and mild with little or no advancewarning. The Anderson
EMA tries to forecast tornadoes. When we believe there is a high probability
that a tornado will affect our city, the outdoor warning sirens are sounded.
The following emergency events are the primary focus of the AEMS: 1. Tornados 2. Severe Winter Weather (ice or snow storms) 3. Severe Thunderstorms with Lightning 4. Earthquakes 5. Flooding 6. Hazardous Chemical Accidents 7. Major Transportation Incidents 8. Protection of City Resources Against Terrorism The information below is primarily for weather related events. Due to security concerns, the Anderson EMA does not provide any information or allow the public inspection of any documents regarding specifics in dealing with chemical accidents, weapons of mass destruction, or anti-terrorism plans for the City of Anderson. Anderson Emergency Alert System How the Community is Warned Community alerts are disseminated by several different methods: Community Sirensare strategically located throughout the city. A steady tone indicates a community emergency is occurring. If you hear a siren, then immediately seek shelter and implement your emergency preparedness plan. Also, when you hear the sirens blowing, tune your radio or tv to the designated emergency alert station for additional information. NOAA Weather Radioprovides 24hr weather bulletins and severe weather warnings for the county. The weather radio is also used to disseminate other community emergency information, where authorized by National Weather Service. EAS (emergency alert station)- The designated emergency alert station for Anderson is: * WQME 98.7 FM DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PROGRAMS Anderson SkyWarnis a program that consists of EMA
Staff and volunteer weather spotters stationed in the community. When alerted
by the emergency operations center, Sky Warn Network is activated to monitor
local conditions. Sky Warn utilizes weather tracking computers, on-site weather
reporting equipment, reports from other communities, TV meteorologists and live
reports from amateur radio operators within a 150 mile region of Anderson. If
conditions warrant, then Net Control will deploy volunteer spotters throughout
the city.
